Only 30% of Energy Meters in the U.S. Have been Upgraded to Smart Meters

Parks Associates home energy management research finds that only 30% of the 160 million meters in the United States have been upgraded to smart meters. This means that a majority of meters have no communications within U.S. broadband households. To complicate the matter further, there are over 10 million load control devices deployed using hundreds of different demand response communication approaches.  No single technology is used by more than 10% of utilities.

Time-of-Use Electricity Billing Makes a Difference in Customer Satisfaction

Parks Associates announced new research finding at the 2014 Smart Energy Summit in Austin this week. The results of a new consumer satisfaction survey report that many consumers are nervous about switching to a variable rate or time-of-use (TOU) energy program, thinking that their energy bills will increase after doing so. Google buys Nest Labs for $3.2 billion

This is an insane amount of money to spend on a start up. My estimate is that $3.2B is more than 20X earnings. So why does Google think that is worth $3.2B?
